		Summer greetings from the dean Dear staff members, We are unlikely ever to forget the spring of 2020, and as the new dean of a new faculty looking for a sharp and strong profile, it has been rather strange to have to run things from a distance. Fortunately, we are now back at our workplace, and once again the labs and research are buzzing with activity. This is very pleasing. Unfortunately, we will have to wait a little longer before you students can return to the lecture theatres, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. We have had a flying start at Tech, and corona made very sure that everything we ‘usually’ do is turned upside down. You have been no less than amazing at finding solutions, to continue your work at a distance, with everything from home teaching from your basement or attic via Zoom to creative home workplaces in the children's room, at the kitchen table or from the couch. Thank you for all your hard work, despite the challenging conditions. >>>

		Consultation process for engineering area kicked off The consultation proposal for the proposed new organisation of the engineering area has now been sent out. The consultation process runs until 1 September, after which the consultation responses will be included in the basis for the final decision. There will be a parallel process involving the employees in the engineering area. >>>

		Finn Borchsenius to continue as vice-dean for education at Tech Finn Borchsenius has been the vice-dean for education of both the new faculties since 1 January, and he has decided to continue as the vice-dean for education at the Faculty of Technical Sciences from 2021. Dean Eskild Holm Nielsen is delighted: “Finn has a drive and experience which is invaluable in the process of creating a new organisation at the engineering area as well as in the development of the Tech faculty’s strategy. With Finn we have a strong foundation for the further development of the faculty and I look forward to a continued good working relationship”. >>>

		Larger intake: The faculty has been allocated more student places More students are to have the opportunity to study a technical-scientific degree programme at Aarhus University, and after the summer holidays, 231 more applicants will be able to take one of the new student places at the Faculty of Technical Sciences. >>>

		New ground rules for external collaboration to secure responsible conduct of research and freedom of research AU is introducing a new set of ground rules for external research collaboration. The rules will ensure responsible practice and freedom in collaboration, and they will help clarify a complex area. >>>

		New graduate school – new website As a result of the faculty division, the faculty of Technical Sciences now has its own graduate school, the Graduate School of Technical Sciences (GSTS), and the new graduate school has launched a new website. >>>

		New professor to give climate research at AU a boost of energy: We want to move to the very top! From 1 June, the appointment of Professor Peter Langen will reinforce climate research at the Department of Environmental Science and iClimate. Peter Langen comes from a management position at DMI - Danish Meteorological Institute, and he will be involved in building up and developing research into climate modelling at the department. >>>

		Flemming Ekelund takes up position as honorary professor Department of Environmental Science is now one soil biologist richer. Flemming Ekelund, an associate professor at the Department of Biology at the University of Copenhagen, has been appointed an honorary professor at Aarhus University. >>>

		PhD award for predicting functional properties in soil layers Cecilie Hermansen from the Department of Agroecology has been awarded Aarhus University Research Foundation's PhD Award 2020. The prize wad awarded 4 June. Using new analytical methods, Cecilie Hermansen has made it easier to assess the risk that spraying a specific piece of land with pesticides will lead to contamination of the drinking water. >>>

		DKK 24 million from Independent Research Fund Denmark to Technical Sciences Independent Research Fund Denmark grants DKK 23.8 million to six research projects at Technical Sciences. >>>

		New appointments to strengthen research on sustainable packaging The Department of Food Science at Aarhus University strengthens its strategic focus on research on innovative, sustainable packaging solutions with the appointment of two new tenure tracks, who are highly specialized in this area. >>>
